Children's Radio Foundation

The youth reporters at Bigger than life #AlexFm 89.1 in Johannesburg, South Africa, use radio to get their communities speaking about violence, a very serious issue in the township of Alexandra.

They bring out the stories of those affected - like Monica Maubane, who’s father was killed as a result of gun violence - and share community solutions to address the problem.

“I love radio,” says Monica, “because to me it’s a very good feeling. It makes me leave all the problems I have. I love inspiring young people to do great things in life and realise their worth.”

Fellow youth reporter Itumeleng Banda, speaking on the power of radio, says, “If people take what they have learned from their experiences or take their pain and actually express it with the world, it can be a dosage of healing to another person on the other side.”
