Has media forgotten the social values of sport?

On the 7th February 2018, SOAS Radio in partnership with C4D and ConnectSport will host the World Radio Day 2018 - Sport & Media: has media forgotten the social values of sport?

When it comes to sport, the mainstream media has traditionally relied on big news and famous faces to sell newspapers or increase audiences. Thanks to social media, however, grassroots and community-based organisations are now able to connect directly with their audiences. What does this mean for those under-represented groups and communities who have previously received very little media coverage? Can it help to change public attitudes, with regards to participation and cultural divides? Can it help to get the nation more physically active, and what role can radio play in helping to demonstrate the social impact of sport?

On February 13th, UNESCO will stage its annual World Radio Day which this year is dedicated to ‘Radio and Sport’. To mark this, SOAS Radio is partnering with ConnectSport to hold an event which is free to attend on Wednesday, February 7th.
