PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND SPORT IN WILTSHIRE

Inspired by UNESCO’s World Radio Day, Ian Nockolds used my own community broadcasting expereince to better understand what opportunities exist, where he lives, in Wiltshire, for local people to lead healthier happier lives

In 2017 Sport England commissioned a number of research studies across the country to look at the "attitudes and behaviours of residents … to sport and physical activity”. Indeed, Sport England have a particular focus on increasing physical activity amongst: women and girls, disabled people, lower socio-economic groups and older people.

Given that the theme of this year’s UNESCO World Radio Day was sport, specifically a celebration of its ability to inspire and connect communities, there couldn't be a better opportunity to talk to the community leaders where I live, in Wiltshire, about the opportunities for local people to engage in sport and physical activity.

My name is Ian Nockolds and for the past 10 years I’ve been a volunteer sports broadcaster at Somer Valley FM, a community radio station broadcasting across North East Somerset.

I was lucky enough to speak to Sandie Webb, Leader of Chippenham Town Council, Barry Stephens, from Chippenham Town FC Ability Counts and Melksham Town Football Club Chairman, Darren Perrin, who all told me about the activities and organisations they are involved with and the opportunities that exist for all members of our community to participate in sport.
